TOM FORD Beauty: Illuminating Cheek Color in Blush Guilt & Bronzed Amber (Review & Swatches)

Illuminating Cheek Color Header

Although Fire Lust is my absolute favorite item from the TOM FORD Beauty 2013 Summer Color Collection, the limited-edition Illuminating Cheek Colors in Blush Guilt and Bronzed Amber ($58) are a close second. Capturing the natural, warm tones the skin reflects at dusk, the Tom Ford Illuminating Cheek Color sculpts and defines cheekbones with a radiant glow. Pearls enhance the formula, giving the cheeks gorgeous luster, added definition, structure and illumination. They impart the loveliest glow to the skin and really help create the “look of skin that is bathed in sunset light in the summer” that defines the summer beauty collection.

It is important to note that Blush Guilt and Bronzed Amber are not intended to be used as blushers – they are illuminators. As such, they are not heavily pigmented and won’t provide opaque color.  These products are all about the “glow” and less about color.

IMG_3290

These are housed in the same type of packaging as the TOM FORD Beauty Traceless Foundation Stick and application is simple: apply a few strokes of the stick onto cheeks and blend into skin. To recreate the TOM FORD Beauty 2013 Signature Summer look, pair with a Tom Ford bronzing powder for a sensuous, sun-bronzed effect.

BLUSH GUILT

Blush Guilt is a warm-toned pale peachy-pink color with visible microshimmer.  When applied, Blush Guilt is essentially sheer (unless you are very pale). It leaves my NC25 skin with a lovely dewy finish but very little color. The effect on the skin is very similar to that of Fire Lust, but the liquid illuminator is a bit more pigmented. On the other hand, Blush Guilt is much easier to apply than Fire Lust (which works best mixed with foundation).

BRONZED AMBER

Of these two illuminators, I reach most often for Bronzed Amber.  Although it looks almost alarmingly dark in its stick form, when applied it imparts a lovely warm bronze sheen to the skin.  It adds definition to the cheek bones and just the right amount of color to leave you with a sun-kissed glow.

SWATCHES

I had a very challenging time trying to get good swatches of these two products. The shimmer factor in each made it almost impossible for my camera to focus properly. I’ll try to re-do these when I have a moment, but here is quick comparison of the two in daylight and shade.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The Good: Both Blush Guilt and Bronzed Amber are excellent illuminators that give the wearer a lovely “sun-kissed” glow with a dewy finish. The formula is creamy and smooth and blends easily. In terms of longevity, Blush Guilt lasted about 7 hours on me and Bronzed Amber about 8 1/2 hours.  If your skin is on the oily side you likely won’t get as much staying power unless you use a powder on top of the illuminators.

The Bad: I found that Blush Guilt and Fire Lust give me very similar results.  I wish the pigmentation in Blush Guilt was a bit better, but on my skintone (NC25) it really is quite sheer (the above swatches of Blush Guilt are VERY heavily swatched to pick up that much color). If I had to pick between Blush Guilt and Fire Lust, I would pick Fire Lust.

What do you think of the Illuminating Cheek Colors?  Will you be buying either shade?

TOM FORD Beauty: Fire Lust Skin Illuminator Review & Swatches

Fire_Lust_Header

Have you ever owned any cosmetics that were just so beautiful in their packaging that you almost didn’t want to use them? That’s how I feel about Fire Lust, the limited-edition Skin Illuminator that is part of the TOM FORD Beauty Summer 2013 Color Collection. I love the way the light catches the bottle and enhances the pearlescence of the liquid. I love the packaging and pump delivery system. I love everything about it.

I mean, really…

Makeup porn, anyone?

FIRE LUST SKIN ILLUMINATOR

Inspired by the look of skin bathed in summer evening light, this illuminator creates an irresistible, translucent glow. It’s peach-pink shade flatters every skin tone while moisturizing and soothing skin, and its highly micronized pearls diffuse light for a naturally enhanced, sun-kissed look.”  – TOM FORD Beauty

Fire Lust is very subtle.  It delivers a “my skin but better” glow but does not deposit a lot of color or shimmer (which is exactly the way I like it). If you are looking for a heavy, highly pigmented product to add a pop of color to your summer routine, this isn’t for you.

According to TOM FORD Beauty, Fire Lust should be applied “all over the face on its own, or mixed with the TOM FORD Traceless Foundation, to achieve radiant and balanced skin. The illuminator can also be used as a highlighter under or over makeup.”

Although it can be worn on it’s own as suggested above, in my experience it actually works best when mixed directly with foundation. I also like to carefully applied it over or under makeup (generally under). If you are too heavy-handed with application over makeup, the liquid consistency of Fire Lust can result in patchiness because it is able to lift the makeup you’ve already applied. A light hand is best.

SWATCHES & COMPARISONS

One of the best things about Fire Lust is the formula.  It is extremely lightweight, thin and easily blendable. It results in a very subtle, yet dewy, naturally warm peach-pink finish.

If you take a closer look, you can see the fine gold dust enveloped in the liquid. This is what causes the gorgeous sheen this product delivers.

Fire_Lust_Swatches

When blended into the skin it is essentially colorless… you can spot some light shimmer in the image below, but it truly becomes a second-skin.

do you see it

As mentioned above, my favorite application method is mixing Fire Lust with my foundation. It adds a lovely sun-kissed glow to your face that is absolutely natural. The swatches below are rather heavy handed, but I wanted you to see the difference between foundation alone and foundation + Fire Lust.

Foundation_Swatches

LONGEVITY

Like all TOM FORD Beauty products, the staying power for Fire Lust is top-notch.  When I wear it alone (over/under makeup), it last between 6 – 8 hours. Six on hotter days… 8 on cooler summer days. When combined with foundation, Fire Lust is at the mercy of your foundation. It will last as long as your foundation does!

TOM FORD Fall/Winter 2013 Womenswear Collection: The Details

TF_Detail

By now I am sure you have all seen the images from the TOM FORD Fall/Winter 2013-2014 London Fashion Week runway show (if not, check them out here). Although the reviews have been somewhat mixed, everyoneand I mean everyoneis talking about it. Ford himself has gone on record saying that he believes this is one of his strongest collections ever and, considering his work with Gucci, that is a bold statement.

He certainly did give us something to talk about. The Lichtenstein-inspired sequined “pop” gowns. The plush, technicolor fur coats. The frayed hems and fringe. The delicate lace and bold patterns. The mixed animal prints. I’m sure you’ve seen them all.

What you probably haven’t seen is the amazing detail that has gone into each and every look. It’s truly impossible to talk about TOM FORD without referencing  the impeccable tailoring, hand-embroidered beading and gorgeous silhouettes that are synonymous with the brand.

The gallery below illustrates exactly what I am talking about… there are captures of just about every element you can imagine. The only thing I am still hunting for is some better shots of the minaudiere’s because I swear they look like they are attached to a huge ring.  Gimme.

In my opinion, saying this was a triumphant return to the catwalk is putting it mildly.

Check out the details in the gallery and let me know what you think in the comments below!

TOM FORD Fall/Winter 2013-2014 Womenswear Runway Show/London Fashion Week

If you happen to follow me on twitter you probably saw the barrage of TOM FORD related tweets about tonight’s runway show at London Fashion Week. If there was any doubt that designer Tom Ford has truly decided to put the secretive days of fashion presentations behind him, the elaborate display at Lancaster House in St. James Palace put that to rest. As guests approached the larger-than-life venue they were teased with just a hint of the decadence that awaited them inside.

Even though there was no livestream of the show (to the dismay of fans worldwide), the non-stop tweets and instagram photos illustrated first hand that this show was unlike all others. There was no ban on photography. No secret agreements to sign. This was full access TOM FORD and the world was able to see the looks at the same time as attendees thanks to the internet. There is even some video available (First looks, Mashup, Coats and fringeTom Ford bow) thanks to @TeleFashion!

The show descriptor found on each seat in Lancaster House read “Cross Cultural Multi Ethnic” and hinted at what was to come. This collection is a departure from the predominantly neutral TOM FORD palette that we have grown accustomed to the last few seasons.  Sure, we’ve seen some jewel tones in almost every collection since his first eponymous offering but this is different. This is beyond jewel tones… this is technicolor. Bold. Brash. Bright.

And it’s signature TOM FORD sexy.

Lace. Animal print. Beading. Furs.

Fringe.  I love the fringe.

Love.

It’s opulent and decadent.

It’s over-the-top and fun.

It’s pure TOM FORD and it’s anything but simple.

“Cross cultural and multi ethnic… that’s what the world is,” said Ford after the show. And that is exactly what this collection is.

I’ve already heard some people saying that they feel like this collection is too over the top. Vulgar even. The thing is, this is how TOM FORD does runway. Last year, Tom Ford told Grazia Magazine “when you do a runway show you have to amp things up in a way so that they read from a great distance – so that they are designed for photography rather than for a consumer. So you can exaggerate things to the point where they don’t actually function in real life for most peoples’ lives.”  This show most definitely meets those requirements!  This collection wasn’t what I expected from TOM FORD…. which is exactly why it is so perfect for his return to the runway.

Taken as it was presented today… in its full runway regalia, I can see how it could be a bit much. But if you take a look at the individual elements and I think you’ll find yourself thinking positive thoughts. Look at the detail. The beading. The lace.

Take a deeper look at the images below and share your thoughts in the comments below!

Sneak Peek: TOM FORD Beauty Summer 2013 Collection & Ad Campaign

tf-1

In less than 2 days designer Tom Ford will be making history (history has been made! Read all the details here). For the first time since the launch of his eponymous womenswear line in 2010, Ford has decided to hold a full scale runway show to showcase his Fall/Winter 2013 RTW Collection. Not only is this his first runway show for TOM FORD – it’s also his first since he left Gucci in 2004. Back then Ford was known for his blockbuster shows, so it was a hard pill to swallow when he decided to forego those for smaller presentations few year ago. To say that this show is a big deal in the fashion world would be the understatement of the century. But while everyone is going gaga over the news and trying to figure out who they can bribe to get into the show, some other news has quietly leaked online.

News about the TOM FORD Beauty Summer 2013 Beauty Collection.

I know it isn’t as exciting as the runway show… but I do love my TOM FORD Beauty products!

Although the official news release has not been released yet, a preview of the beauty collection was held earlier this month in London and now I finally have some more definite information to share with you!  Most of the line will launch in May/June worldwide while the new fragrance, Sahara Noir, will be launching in the Middle East this March.

Tom Ford says that he had one goal with this collection. He “wanted to capture a very particular look of skin that is bathed in sunset light in the summer. It is a sultry and sublime glow. In this light, every woman looks irresistibly relaxed and sensual.”

TOM FORD Beauty Summer 2013

Featured in the Summer 2013 collection are Terra and Gold Dust, the same gorgeous bronzers we saw last year as well as the following new products:

Note: As of April 25th, the full collection is now available online at Neiman Marcus. Details here.

SIGNATURE FRAGRANCE

Sahara Noir Eau de Parfum (March launch in Middle East/June elsewhere, 1.7oz/$150)

Sahara Noir is the first new Signature Fragrance to be released since Violet Blonde in 2011 and there is buzz that the scent is meant to fill the void left by the discontinuation of Amber Absolute.

According to Ford, “Sahara Noir is rich and exotic; it wraps the balsamic, incense-touched notes of frankincense in gold and honey-colored light. Middle Eastern culture has an extraordinary appreciation for the luxurious, emotional and memorable qualities of fragrance; perfume is worn there in a way that feels very familiar to me. Sahara Noir is my interpretation of this heritage. It is a deep and substantial perfume that caresses the senses… inspired by the mystery and luxury of the Middle East.

sahara-noir

This write-up describes it much better than I could:

The oriental woody juice is crafted around a heart of frankincense. This key ingredient is complemented by top notes of cistus essence Orpur® (Orpur denotes a natural ingredient of exceptional quality and purity), bitter orange, Jordanian calamus – an oasis sweet grass – and Levantine cypress, famed for growing in the gardens of the 1001 Arabian Nights.

The heart blends frankincense essence Orpur® , cinnamon, cool papyrus extract, Egyptian jasmine templar and rose absolute from Morocco. A beeswax extraction from Burma lends body and a supple, honeyed-animalic richness.

The warm dry down is laced with amber. It is formed by a special blend of labdanum – labdanum absolute and a rich natural fraction of labdanum known as ambreinol – combined with benzoin, vanilla, cedar, frankincense resin, agarwood and balsam.

It sounds amazing… I’ll be very curious to see how it compares to Amber Absolute and I know at least one person who is interested in comparing it to Amber Dew!

I adore Violet Blonde and it’s bottle and Sahara Noir is presented in a gold metalized version of the same.

And I think that is Lais Ribeiro in the ad campaign above… correct me if I am wrong (confirmed by Women Management, that is Lais, photographed by Mr. Ford himself!).

Final Thoughts

The official U.S. release date has been confirmed as May 1, 2013… and I am counting down the minutes until then.

So what do you think?  Anything calling your name?

I want one of each, please!
