Interview and S/S 2012 Photoshoot: Tom Ford for Oyster Magazine #97

To help mark the opening of TOM FORD at Harrolds Sydney, the designer himself sat down for an exclusive interview with Oyster Magazine editor Alice Cavanagh.   The full interview is only available in the hard copy edition of Oyster but, for those of us without access to it, some highlights are available online.

As an added bonus, photographer Benny Horne captured some gorgeous images of models Ajak and Ambrose Carter wearing pieces from the Spring/Summer 2012 Collections.

Some of my favorite bits from the interview:

On his public persona and the spotlight that comes with being a designer:
… In today’s world one needs a bit of the spotlight to succeed. I have sort of a split personality: In my personal life, I am quite shy and prefer being alone to being out or in groups of people. In my professional life, however, I realised early on that it is important that a designer company has a ‘voice’, and that voice comes, of course, from the designer: from me. A connection with the consumer is key, as the customer is, in a sense, buying the personality and taste of the designer. For that reason, a public persona of some sort is necessary for a fashion designer.

On the innate human desire to be liked:
Don’t we all long to be liked? Isn’t this a primal desire of humans? I think it is one of the things that drives people to consume luxury goods: the belief that if they look good, people will like them more. In fact, I think that people that are drawn to the fashion business are innately insecure — the same with actors and performers. There is a need to be loved there.

On the general aesthetic of the current decade:
I think that our cultural obsession with trying to define the period that we live in while we are living in it is a bit nuts. We can’t possibly have the perspective to make real judgments about our own time until we are somewhat removed from it and can look back at it with more clarity. Headlines like “The Movie of the Decade!” when it is 2011 make me laugh. Who can possibly know something like that two years into the decade? It is too soon to know what sort of aesthetic defines (or will define) our decade. As a rule, however, each decade is, in a sense, a reaction to the previous decade, so it might follow that this decade will be less about glitz and more about content and quality. But, then again, it might not.

On sexuality and the naked body:
I don’t think that sex is offensive and I don’t think that the human body is offensive. In fact, I find them very beautiful, which is why some might say that sex features heavily in my work. I have never understood the fear of the naked body that is prevalent today.

On being a Virgo/perfectionist:
Every day? Are you kidding? I make it in the middle of the night every time I get up to go to the bathroom!… I always say to Richard [Buckley, Ford’s long-time partner] that he is lucky that at least he can leave the house sometimes and get away from me, whereas I can’t ever get away from myself or out of my head.

On what “completes” him:
For me, without a shadow of a doubt, my connections with other people are the most important thing in life.

24 Hours with Tom Ford: A Day in the Life via Harper’s Bazaar, March 2012

Harper’s Bazaar debuts it’s redesignthe first in 10 yearswith the March 2012 issue.  Along with changes to the overall look and feel of the magazine, a number of content changes are also present, including a variety of “Lists” that will now be featured each month:

The A-List:  The cover star reveals their favorite things of the moment.
Shopping List:  Editors’ and contributors’ share their style picks.
Wish List:  A fashion industry insider shares what they covet.
Wait List:  Features an item that will be a sure sell-out.
My List:  A fashion powerhouse reveals his daily routine.

Tom Ford agreed to be the first subject in the “My List” series and shares what his typical day looks like with readers. Though the hard copy isn’t available yet, you can read the full article online now.

Some of my favorite parts, in his own words:

4:30 A.M. I never really sleep much and often start my day at this time. When I am very lucky and sleep through the night, I might get up at 7:00, but that is rare. The first thing I do when I get out of bed is weigh myself…

… I make myself a tall glass of iced espresso (I don’t like warm drinks), get into a hot bath, and slowly sip my drink as I come to life. Often I lie in the tub for a half hour and just let my mind wander. I find a bath meditative and usually prepare myself for the day in this manner. Once out of the tub, I throw on my gym clothes.

8:00 A.M. Typically, I answer my e-mails. On average, I get about 100 per day. Then I do a bit of work before working out with my trainer at 8:00. The home page on my computer is set to the Daily Beast Cheat Sheet, an excellent summary of the news of the day from different publications around the world….

9:15 A.M.  … I don’t carry a phone with me because I hate talking on the phone and especially hate talking on cell phones. I do have an iPhone, but I use it primarily for music and as a camera. In an emergency, of course, I use it as a phone. I am not really even sure what my number is. I have an iPad but use it just for reading books or screenplays, and I carry my MacBook Air with me everywhere.

10:00 A.M. I usually arrive at the office by 10:00. I have a weakness for doughnuts and often completely ruin my diet by eating a doughnut or two when I arrive…

1:00 P.M. I hate going out for lunch during a workday because it slows down my pace and ruins my rhythm. I prefer to eat at my desk. Actually, I wander around the design studio with a plate in my hand as I dine on, for example, salmon sashimi and a salad of tomatoes and mozzarella. I often have a bit of dark chocolate after lunch.

6:00 P.M. Most nights, I work at the office until anytime between 6:00 and 8:00, depending on whether or not I have to go out to dinner. If I do have to go out at night, which I do about four nights a week, I try to take a 45-minute nap, have another hot bath, and put on a clean shirt.

8:00 P.M. I am not someone who likes cocktail parties or large dinner parties, but I have to attend them often. I much prefer very small dinners with close friends. I eat at the same restaurants in London most nights…

… My favorite evenings are actually spent at home. Richard [Buckley, Ford’s partner of 25 years] is a great cook, and I love dinner in the kitchen with just the two of us and the dogs.

10:30 P.M. … Believe it or not, I usually take another hot bath and wash my face. Then we watch a bit of television (usually things we have recorded) or read and go to sleep. I don’t wear anything in bed. In fact, I rarely wear clothes at all when I am at home.

Reading that makes me want to go take a bath.  Or three!

TOM FORD Spring/Summer 2012 Editorial Round-up: Marloes Horst, Demi Moore and Kinga Rajzak

March 2012 is going to be a good month for Tom Ford fans everywhere!

In addition to advertising that will be featured in a number of the March issues, quite a few pieces from the Spring/Summer 2012 Womenswear Collection have been featured in the accompanying editorials as well.  This is just a quick roundup of the first batch (including one from February) but there will be more to come!  Stay tuned.

Marloes Horst by photographer Will Davidson for Harper’s Bazaar Australia, March 2012 (via Fashion Gone Rogue):

Marloes is wearing the Powder Silk Georgette Cocktail Dress with Ostrich Feather Embroidery.  I have to say I am loving the look of this dress in the editorial… that feather detail is amazing!

Confession: this editorial is actually my favorite in the round-up.  The setting is spectacular and I think Davidson did an amazing job bringing it to life with this shoot. I highly encourage you to check out the rest by clicking on the picture above.

Demi Moore by photographer Cedric Buchet for Harper’s Bazaar, February 2012 (via My Face Hunter):

Demi is wearing the same Black Sequin Embroidered Evening Dress that model Daga Ziober wore in this shoot for Vogue Germany.  I am still waiting for a good full-length shot of this dress in an editorial… so far it seems we only have some teasers!

Kinga Rajzak by photographer Sølve Sundsbø for Vogue Japan, March 2012 (via Fashion Gone Rogue):

This was a bit tricky to identify…. I think Kinga is wearing the Chalk Silk Georgette Tied Halter-Neck top from Lookbook Look 22, but if anyone knows different, please let me know!

Though the Horst editorial above edges this one slightly as my personal favorite, I would be lying if I said this one wasn’t a very close second.  Sølve Sundsbø is one of my all-time favorite photographers and this editorial, which also features the beautiful Saskia de Brauw, doesn’t disappoint.

Finally, as an added bonus…

Cara Delevingne by photographer Simon Emmett for S Moda, January 2012 (via Fashion Gone Rogue):

Although this is a piece from the Fall/Winter 2012 Collection it is still worth sharing.  Carla is wearing the ever-popular Black Floral Chantilly Lace Evening Dress with Jet Detail that was featured here and here.  Still just as beautiful.

What do you think?  Which of these images is your favorite so far?

Teaser: TOM FORD Fall/Winter 2012 Menswear Collection

In case you missed this little tidbit on T: The New York Times Style Magazine yesterday, men’s fashion director Bruce Pask shared some highlights of the TOM FORD Fall/Winter 2012 Menswear Presentation in Milan.

According to Pask, the collection, deemed “beyond elegant” on his personal Facebook page, ” was surprisingly neutral in comparison to brighter seasons past. The handpicked house models walked around the hyper-elegant and intimate showroom so that the clothes’ most tactile qualities could be properly appreciated.”

As for his favorite look?

“Argentine coyote, which has a rougher texture that Ford prefers, topped the lapels of [a] luxurious tweed coat worn with the softest buttoned knit and a checked, pleated trouser, all in toffee brown tones.”

Thanks to the talents of Fashion illustrator Richard Haines, we actually get to see a sneak peek of the look described above:

That coat… oh, that coat looks divine, even as an illustration!

So tell me, what do you think?

Starring Mathias Bergh and shot by Mr. Ford himself, the collection features an array of beautifully constructed linen suits guaranteed to land the wearer on a best dressed list, luxe crocodile John moccasins, beautifully tailored shirts and pants, swimwear, and some amazing jackets.

Which is your favorite look?

Daga Ziober wears TOM FORD S/S 2012 for Vogue Germany, January 2012

Unless I am mistaken, it appears that Vogue Germany got the jump on everyone else and published the very first image of someone wearing a TOM FORD Spring/Summer 2012 design for a photoshoot!  Photographer Sebastian Kim captured this shot of model Daga Ziober for an art deco-inspired shoot in the January 2012 issue of the magazine.

Fashion editor Katie Mossman outfitted Ziober in head-to-toe TOM FORD: the Black Sequin Embroidered Evening Dress with Leggings,  Tortoise Shell & Jet Crystal Box Clutch and Ivory Hand Polished Sandals.

Here is the Lookbook shot of the dress:

I wish we had a better view of the front of the dress, but this will do for now.  Thoughts?

The Official Lookbook: TOM FORD Spring/Summer 2012 Womenswear Collection Images (HQ)

January has always been a good month for TOM FORD fans and it appears that trend will continue in 2012.  The Spring/Summer 2012 Ad Campaign starring Mirte Maas and Mathias Bergh, set to launch in March magazines, has already gone public and individual pieces from the collection are finally beginning to make their way online via photoshoots.

I’ll be sharing the first of those photoshoot images later today but first, I am delighted to share the high quality lookbook images for the collection.  I think we can all agree that sneak previews and videos are great, but nothing beats high quality images when it comes to highlighting details and, where TOM FORD is concerned, the details are my favorite part!

Yet again, I am dying over the accessories in this collection.  In my dreams there is an entire Lookbook dedicated solely to them!

So, what do you think?
