Tom Ford Honored as Harper’s Bazaar UK’s “Man in a Woman’s World”

“I think you have to love women, number one, and I do.
And as I said, when you’re in this kind of company it’s very easy to be a man in a woman’s world
and, you know, in my industry and with what I do I meet the most amazing women…
and I think I’m fortunate enough to know some of the great women of our time.”

On the evening of November 7th, 2011, the Harper’s Bazaar UK Women of the Year Awards were held in London’s Claridges.  Among the female-dominated Role Model of the Year, Breakthrough of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, and Designer of the Year Awards, a few men were also honored.

Tom Ford was awarded the aptly namedand much deserved“Man in a Woman’s World” Award for his contributions in transforming the fashion and beauty industries in 2011.

Longtime muse Natalia Vodianova presented Mr. Ford with the award and echoed the sentiments of many when she remarked “When Tom Ford stopped doing womenswear, I was like, ‘what am I going to do?'”.  Thankfully, she no longer has to wonder.

Both Vodianova and presenter Lily Cole honored Ford by wearing designs from his collections; Vodianova in a Black Velvet Laced Up Front Cocktail Dress from the Autumn/Winter 2011 Womenswear Collection.  Cole in the black fishnet, hand embroidered, cobalt blue pailletté, python patterned long evening gown from the Spring/Summer 2011 Collection.

Prior to the ceremony, the winners answered some questions for Harper’s Bazaar UK that offer insight into their personalities. My personal favorite is Mr. Ford’s motto.  Words to live by!

Man in a woman’s world: Tom Ford

What was your highlight of 2011?

Having my first women’s collection under my own name arrive in the stores. I felt complete again.

Most valuable advice you’ve ever been given?

Only work with people who you’d have dinner with.

What is your enduring motto?

Work hard, do your best, and then fuck it. What is going to happen is going to happen. The universe ultimately decides our destiny.

What is your secret weapon?

My sense of humour… I’m great fun at funerals. Tragedy and comedy are very closely linked.

Who is your woman of the year?

I know too many great women. My “bitch of the year”, however, is my little female fox terrier India. She is lovely.

What are your ambitions for 2012?

If I listed them all, you would think that I was completely mad, but let’s just say that my ambition is to try to have less dreams and ambitions… To be honest, I have everything that anyone could ever want right now.

 Congratulations, Mr. Ford!

TOM FORD Beauty Success: $52,000 Worth of Products Sold in One Hour

Tom Ford Appearance at Bergdorf Goodman on November 1, 2011

Cha-ching!

An article published on WWD today reports that over $52,000 of TOM FORD Beauty products were sold during Tom Ford’s hourlong in-store personal appearance at Bergdorf Goodman on November 1st.  Following that, sales continued at a second private event held at the flagship store on Madison Avenue.  Add this to the $200,000 worth of product sold by Neiman Marcus Direct and Bergdorf Goodman Direct between October 14th and 26th and I would say the expanded Beauty Collection is a success, wouldn’t you?

The undisputed best seller was the chocolatey-brown hued nail lacquer know as Bitter Bitch. (Read the reviews of Bitter Bitch and more here.)

Mr. Ford briefly spoke to WWD about the launch following the private event at the flagship store and offered some insight into his partnership with Estée Lauder:

“When I started working with Estée Lauder, one of the reasons I wanted to work with them to create Tom Ford Beauty was because I wanted a full collection of makeup and skin care. So this is something that was planned from the very beginning, and I’m so glad to see it realized.”

Distribution of TOM FORD Beautyand the growth of the collection itselfwill continue to expand and evolve, but there are no plans to make it a mass market product:

“We’re going at a slow pace, in the same way we did eyewear.  We have a relatively high price point and a tight distribution. It’s the same thing we’re doing with our clothes — we’re making a luxury product and targeting specific customers. Of course, cosmetics are more accessible for most women. Our customer is the Tom Ford woman, or someone who aspires to be if she could afford it.”

I wasn’t able to make it to NYC for the event, but I have ordered quite a bit of the collection online and am pleased with the products I have received so far.  I will be reviewing those on Full Time Ford soon, but meanwhile check out these posts from some of the fortunate folks who did get to attend:

Interview: Tom Ford talks Luxury, Inspiration and more for WISH

Tom Ford by Simon Perry

Back in 2008, TOM FORD entered into an exclusive partnership with Harrolds, Australia’s luxury department store for men.  This October, that partnership culminated in the opening of the first Australian TOM FORD in-store shop.  To celebrate the opening in Sydney, respected journalist and author Mitchell Oakley Smith sat down with Tom Ford for his first Australian interview in nearly three years on behalf of WISH Magazine.

This particular interview had me hooked from the get-go.  Oakley Smith started by presenting a quick history of Mr. Ford’s life while also highlighting the factors that have made him so influential. One of my favorite parts of the introduction was this observation:

“Ford, now 50, is really two people. There’s Tom Ford: The Brand, the buttoned-down, chest-exposed man whose mere smirk can sell luxury goods. Then there’s Tom Ford: The Man, a quiet businessman who finds more joy spending time with his partner and two fox terriers (the same dogs that appeared in his debut film A Single Man) than in the never-ending fashion cycle that consumes his peers.”

I may not know Mr. Ford personally, but that is certainly the impression I have of him as well, and it is reinforced with each interview/documentary/story I come across.

Oakley Smith asked Mr. Ford some questions I haven’t seen posed recently and these are a few of the highlights:

On his relationship with the press:

“Believe it or not, I am a very shy person and do not like being in the limelight at all. That being said, I learnt quite a while ago that my image does represent the brand and helps to sell products, so I have featured myself in quite a few fragrance and cosmetics ads. While I am sometimes weary of the press when it comes to reviewing my work, I have a number of very close friends who are journalists and to whom I am very grateful as they have helped me build my career.”

On his relationship with Richard Buckley:

“Richard is my rock. We have been together for 25 years and he knows me better than anyone else in the world. He is very supportive of everything that I do but is also quick to criticise something that is not right. I value his honesty and his commitment to me as I know I am not always easy to live with.”

On fashion versus film:

“Fashion and film satisfy completely different needs that I have as a creative person. Fashion is very fast-paced and immediately gratifying.  A film can take years to complete, but completing A Single Man, my first film, was the most satisfying and fulfilling thing that I have ever done... I treat fashion and film as completely separate careers. They operate parallel to each other but fashion for me is a commercial artistic endeavor and film is my most pure form of expression.”

On why he launched TOM FORD with a menswear collection:

“I launched menswear because I couldn’t find anything to wear. I was having my suits made on Savile Row (the tailors do a terrific job) but it was challenging to get them to do anything different – cut a lapel extra wide or give my jacket shoulder a bit of a roll. I realized that there was a big niche in the men’s market and decided to start my own menswear business. The women’s [line] happened organically following the growth of the business. I had been watching women’s wear for five or six years and finally decided what Tom Ford women’s wear would be about. I launched my first women’s collection last year in New York.”

On what “luxury” means to him:

“Luxury today means quality and authenticity. I am creating a product that is not hollow. In an age when disposable culture is literally killing us, a product has to be steeped in integrity and authenticity. We are building a portfolio of beautifully made things that are crafted to last and not trendy or time-stamped, which is a dramatic change to what is happening elsewhere in the industry… Tom Ford clothing is made with inordinate attention to detail and each garment is the result of hours and hours of hand-stitching and finishing. It is imperative, however, that the customer’s experience in the store also be of the same quality as that is all part of the Tom Ford experience.”

On the designers he admires:

“Yves Saint Laurent was a genius and his work in the ’70s was amazing.  As far as contemporary designers, there are so many that I admire that it is difficult to list them all. Miuccia Prada always has a strength and point of view that is visible in all of her work. I also think that [Balenciaga’s] Nicolas Ghesquiere has an incredible talent.”

On the inspiration behind his designs:

“For menswear, I am my own muse. Of course, I have to imagine my 20-year old self and my 70-year old self (and what I would wear if I were blond with blue eyes), but everything I design is something that has my DNA in it and that is missing from my own personal wardrobe. For women’s wear, I have many muses, some of whom walked in my first runway show under my own label – Lauren Hutton, Marisa Berenson and Beyonce, among many others. I am always inspired by women who have a very strong personal style and are unafraid to make bold fashion choices.”

On what items a man should include in his wardrobe:

“Every man should have a well-cut dark suit, a pair of classic black lace-up shoes, black loafers, a blazer, a perfect pair of dark denim jeans and lots of crisp, white cotton shirts. It is also important to always have the perfect sunglasses and a great scent that can become a signature. Lastly, every man should have a daily read of the newspaper and a sense of humor, as these go a long way.”

On what drives him to design clothing:

“What I have enjoyed most about designing for my own label and not for the press is that I am creating clothes that are beautiful, that look great on the body, that make the man or woman wearing them feel amazing.  They are of the highest quality and the most luxurious make and this, to me, is the most important thing… It is always challenging to create something new while remaining true to what my brand is all about.  That being said, the process of designing is one that comes naturally to me and that I love.”

On what the future holds for Tom Ford the man and TOM FORD the brand:

“I am lucky to be able to say that I love what I am doing and I hope to continue for many years to come. I also hope to expand my brand to include all product categories. Why think small?”

TOM FORD on Twitter? Think again.

UPDATED March 25, 2014:

Please click here for details on the Complete TOM FORD Social Media Experience. Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.

Start following the official channels today!

Don’t believe the hype.

Neither TOM FORD the brand – nor Thomas Carlyle Ford the man – are on Twitter. (As of March 28, this has changed! Visit this page for details).

There has been a lot of social media activity lately surrounding the release of the Complete TOM FORD Beauty Collection and OWN Visionaries documentaryBoth Facebook and Twitter have been absolutely buzzing with news and reviews about the doc and products and Bergdorf Goodman in particular has been promoting the beauty launch quite well.

One thing I have noticed of late is that many, many people on twitter seem to believe @ttomford is the official account of TOM FORD. I had always thought it was a fake, myself, but I started to question that the more I saw it mentioned on twitter.

So… I decided to find out.

I broached the question to the Powers at Be at Tom Ford International and they confirmed: it is 100% fake.

I repeat: neither TOM FORD the brand – nor Tom Carlyle Ford the man – are on Twitter.

If you want to follow TOM FORD through official social media channels, you’ll have to stick to the Facebook page for now.

Meanwhile, here’s hoping that one day the brand may have an official presence on Twitter as well!

Janet Jackson wears TOM FORD for Harper’s Bazaar Arabia

The November 2011 issue of Harper’s Bazaar Arabia features a radiant Janet Jackson wearing some particularly amazing pieces from the TOM FORD Fall/Winter 2011 Womenswear Collection.

The Emerald Green Applicqué Lace Cocktail Dress she models on the cover in particular is quite unique because—until now—I have only seen the violet and bronze versions of this dress. Though the bronze and violet are stunning in their own right, I think the emerald green lace Ms. Jackson is wearing here is even more striking.  Then, of course, there are the other amazing pieces.  Ms. Jackson also wore the Raspberry Backless Rouched Tulle Cocktail Dress, RubyVelvet Waist Cincher and Red Degradé Kidassia Fur jacket for the shoot.  I don’t even know where to begin—that fur jacket leaves me speechless every time I see it.  So let’s just look at the photos, shall we?

I think photographer Alan Gelati and stylist Sally Matthews did a great job highlighting the amazing detail  on the clothing while also showcasing Ms. Jackson.  Wouldn’t you agree?

TOM FORD Beauty: Wild Ginger Lip Color Review & Swatches

I don’t normally wear orange-based lip colors, so when I received a package from TOM FORD Beauty that included Wild Ginger I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it.  Orange makes me think of the Cleveland Browns, Halloween and my old high school colors (orange + black, baby!).  Orange has its place—and my lips isn’t one of them!

Needless to say, I was nervous about this lip color.

My first impression was that it appeared to be very orange with a slight hint of red:

To be quite honest, the particular shade of orange shown in the tube above does nothing for me.  I can guarantee you that if I had come across it at a TOM FORD Beauty counter I wouldn’t have even bothered to swatch it considering all the other glorious colors that are available.

Fortunately for me, the TOM FORD gods (aka, the TFB PR lovelies!) sent me a tube to try!

And guess what?  It’s a winner!

On the lips, and under natural lighting, the color is a much redder—and prettier—hue than I expected!

Wild Ginger is anything but a plain orange lip color (I should have known Tom Ford wouldn’t let me down!).  It is a warm, bold orange-RED that is unlike any other lip color I own.   On my medium-pigmented lips it generally looks more red than orange, but you can definitely see the orange undertones in the shade.

Main: Comparison swatch of True Coral and Wild Ginger.
Top to Bottom: Wild Ginger on lips outdoors, indoors (flash), indoors (fluorescent lighting)

True Coral, one of the most popular TOM FORD Private Blend Lip Colors , is an extremely bright and saturated “hot pink” with red undertones.   In contrast, Wild Ginger is a bright and saturated “hot red’ with orange undertones.  Although the orange in Wild Ginger is visible it is not the predominant shade in the lipstick.  It adds just enough lustre and dimension to the color to make it something unique.

The creamy and moisturizing formula contains the same ingredients as the other Private Blend Lip Colors and includes soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter and chamomile flower oil.  The pigmentation is excellent—it will last for approximately 5 hours—and it is lightly scented with vanilla.

The bottom line:  Don’t let the orange color scare you.  Wild Ginger is actually a beautiful and unique red with just the right amount of sass, thanks to the orange undertones!

TOM FORD Beauty: Indian Rose Lip Color Review & Swatches

When you hear the words “TOM FORD Lip Color” what is your first thought?

Do you think about the iconic Black Orchid?  Or perhaps True Coral?  Violet Fatale?  Maybe you think about the $48 price tag and stop there?

Whatever the case may be, I would wager that most people don’t think about the beautiful nudes in the collection.  The boldest colors tend to garner most of the attention, but there are some gorgeous nudes and dusky pinks that are perhaps more wearable for the general masses and just as impressive.

Which brings me to Indian Rose.

Most will say that this shade is a dusky pink with mauve tones and a soft, subtle shimmer.   The best way I can describe it is “my lips, but better!”

Indian Rose has become the color I reach for when my eyes are the focus of a particular look.  I have medium skin, wear either MAC NC25 or NW25, and have medium pigmented lips.  Indian Rose is slightly deeper and more vibrant than my natural lip color so it works beautifully when I want an understated look.

Although you can see the shimmer in the tube it doesn’t show up “glittery” on the lips and instead serves to add a soft glow and lustre to the color.

As is true of the other Private Blend Lip Colors, the pigmentation is strong, the staying power is excellent—it lasts for a good 5 hours—and it is lightly scented with vanilla.  The formula is rich, creamy and extremely moisturizing.  You don’t need to wear a gloss with this unless you are dying for some high impact shine and I actually prefer it by itself.  This isn’t a sheer lipstick at all, but its effect will be amplified depending on the natural pigmentation of your lips.

This shade was introduced as a part of the expanded Beauty Collection so it is only available in the mahogany/black packaging.

When compared to some of the other (bolder) TOM FORD Lip Color offerings, Indian Rose is quiet and understated.  But that doesn’t make it any less gorgeous.

The bottom line: Indian Rose is a great color for anyone looking for the perfect dusky/mauve pink.  It will enhance and amplify your own lip color while providing full coverage that will last for hours!

TOM FORD Beauty: Black Orchid Lip Color Review & Swatches

I had originally planned to save my reviews of the three “original/white packaging” TOM FORD Beauty Private Blend Lip Colors I own for last.  It never occurred to me to review them last year and, now that the packaging has been discontinued, I was concentrating on the new additions to the Collection.

That being said, I have decided to focus on Black Orchid today after receiving a comment from my gorgeous friend Bere Parra, who wanted to know “if there are blackish-red shades (blood-like) in the TOM FORD lip palette.”

Why yes, my dear Bere, there certainly are!  Let me introduce you to Black Orchid:

Black Orchid – Outdoor Lighting

Although Black Orchid is more of a brownish-red color with just a hint of blackened plum, it’s definitely the closest thing to blood-red you’ll find in the TOM FORD line. It is a slightly matte, full coverage lipstick with extremely high pigmentation.

First, let me say that I adore this lipstick.  It’s the perfect vampy red shade and I wear it a lot in the Fall and Winter months when I am feeling a bit vampy myself!  That being said, it isn’t without its challenges. I find it to be the most difficult TOM FORD Lip Color to apply because the color goes on dark from the get-go and just builds from there.

This is what it looks like on me with just one application using a lip brush. (Note: I can’t wear this one without a lip brush and clear lip liner—it bleeds due to the heavy pigmentation.)

If you want to deepen the color just apply a second layer!

Wear time is phenomenal on this lipstick and is the best of all the TOM FORD colors I own—it lasts for about 8 hours—I repeat, 8 hours!—and wears to a lovely brick stain before it disappears:

Amazing, really.

The formula isn’t quite as emollient as some of the others shades available.  This can dry your lips out a bit if they aren’t prepped properly, but as long as you have some gloss or balm handy, you will be fine.

Now, back to pigmentation. If you still think the pigmentation can’t possibly be all that, let me prove you wrong.  The below is a comparison of three lip colors that look “blood red” in the tube:  NARS Fast Ride, Benefit Ms. Behavin’ and TOM FORD Black Orchid.

As you can see, they all look pretty similar in the tube.  Despite that, the formulas are completely different and Black Orchid outperforms them all where pigmentation is concerned.  Fast Ride, which is actually the darkest of the 3 in the tube, goes on sheer.  Ms. behavin—which is a bit more purple than the others—used to be one of my favorite shades, but one swipe of Black Orchid does what 3 swipes of ms. behavin’ does.

So… Black Orchid wins where pigmentation is concerned.  It also wins for its staying-power and its signature TOM FORD vanilla scent.

Finally, I want to focus on the packaging for a second.  Although I love the new mahogany/black packaging, I do have a soft spot for the original white.  There is something very elegant and classy about it… and I really do wish it was still an option.

The “TOM FORD” on the cap has now been replaced with a simple TF that matches the stamp on the lip color itself.  The gold detailing remains, but the white is no more.  What matters, however, is that the lip color formula remains one of the best available today.

And Black Orchid remains one of the best reds available today!

The bottom line: if you are on the hunt for a vampy blood-red lipstick, add Black Orchid to the top of your list!

Now… do you have a blood-red shade that you love?  Tell me about it!

TOM FORD Black Orchid Lip Color is available now (in the new packaging) at your closest TOM FORD Beauty counter and online at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and other fine retailers.
